Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering, Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology (RSET), Rajagiri Valley, Ernakulam, Kerala, India. The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the forerunner departments of RSET and was established in the year 2013. The department strives to excel in the areas of academia, research and consultancy and thereby moulding professionals in the field of Civil Engineering to build a sustainable world.
The mission of our department is to impart quality education and mould technically sound, ethically responsible professionals in the field of Civil Engineering with a broad skill set of creativity, critical thinking and effective communication skills to meet the desired needs of the society within realistic socio-economic environmental constraints.
With the autonomous status of our college, the Civil Engineering curriculum is designed in such a manner that the student has the freedom to decide the pathway in their career progression. With the aid of industry and academia connections, our department offers various activities to the students and the faculty in the form of industry/site visits; expert talks; international level Faculty Development Programs (FDP) and Conferences. Our students prepare themselves to pursue higher studies in engineering and technology; management and related areas and gradually move into teamwork and leadership positions; and to contribute to the development of the profession, the nation, and the society.
The department possesses eminent and experienced teaching faculty with good number of publications. Almost all faculty members are degree holders from premier institutions of our country and many Ph.D holders are from IITs. Faculty members are active in professional bodies like ASCE, ICI, IGS, IE (India), ISTE etc. and have vide exposure to the current development in their field of specialization. Some of our faculty members are research guides for the doctoral degree programme in Kerala Technological University and the department has strong research group in the area of structural, building materials, geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering.
The RSET management is committed to improve the academic quality of teachers and encourages those faculty without Ph.D to acquire the degree, and as such, many are pursuing Ph.D. in reputed institutions like IIT/NIT/CUSAT/Amrita Vidyapeetham. Faculty members and technical staff are encouraged to update themselves through different professional training and faculty development programmes.
The department has a strong consultancy capability in the areas of Structural design, Health monitoring of structures, Fire damage assessment in buildings, Concrete mix design, Traffic & Transportation studies, etc., to name a few. Exposure to various consultancy works helps the faculty to provide hands on and real time problems and projects to students.
The department laboratories are equipped with modern instruments and machines for different laboratory as well as field tests. The laboratories support various testing requirements associated with the consultancy works. Testing of all types of building materials, Water quality testing, Soil investigation, etc. are some of the regular consultancy works undertaken by the department.
Apart from a vibrant civil engineering students association, NIRMANA, the department has active student chapters of different National and International bodies like Indian Concrete Institute (ICI), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The ICI Outstanding Student Chapter Award won by our student chapter is a testimony of our students active involvement in the co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities through these professional bodies.
In association with the M/s UltraTech Cement Ltd., the department has a Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Construction Practices & Materials, first of its kind in Kerala. Through this centre of excellence, it is envisaged to bridge the gap between industry and academia through skill development, exposure to cutting edge technology in the area of construction industry and there by helping the students of RSET in gaining the latest trends in the construction industry.
Our alumnus are well placed in reputed organizations within and outside the country and many are successful entrepreneurs. The department, particularly our students have a strong bond and interaction with our alumni community and thereby creates opportunities to enrich the career development and learning exposures of our students. The department values the feedback from our alumni and other stakeholders and incorporates applicable improvements in our academic curriculum.
In conclusion, I am confident to state that, a student graduating from the Civil Engineering Department of RSET will be equipped with state of the art knowledge; skill to tackle any civil engineering problem and to provide feasible solutions; and will be a committed and successful Civil Engineer.
